This course introduces the student to concepts of “breaking the rectangle” by taking their work out of a flat linear environment and placing it within a multidimensional field that supports installation and immersive art. Several methods of how to build a projection map will be covered with emphasis on concept and purpose. By the end of the course the student will have the ability to build maps through both After Effects and Map Mapper.
Unit 1
Learning Mapping in After Effects
Project: Pedestal Mapping
Using After Effects as the mapping software, please create content to project on the pedestal structure we created earlier in class.
Consider how breaking apart a video across a structure affects the viewer experience. How does the fragmentation affect the whole? Is the piece composed of multiple screens? Or do we see it as one large screen that has now been extruded and transformed across multiple planes?
However you wish to create content is acceptable. Video, animation, 3D animation, etc.
Video should loop. 30 second minimum.
Project will be graded on:
- Ability to technically achieve the project (creating the map, placing video within map)
- Consideration for content vs. structure, consideration for "breaking the rectangle"
- Presentation of installation (verbal introduction to project and statement of support, what concepts you're trying to explore)
- Creativity in approach
Project Objectives:
- introduction to basic mapping techniques within After Effects
- gain knowledge of proper and beneficial workflows when mapping
Unit 2
360 Degree Projection
Project: Cyclorama at Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology
For this assignment you may work individually or in pairs. Please prepare footage that will be projected on the Cyclorama. The piece should bring into question the nature of a 360 degree immersive environment. What is the benefit of a space like this? How can we use spatial awareness to tell stories or explore experiences? If you wish, you may check out the GoPro Fusion from the Media Design Studio A, or, if you're as 3D artist, consider rendering out a 3D environment.
