Fly Mask
2021 | Digital Photography, Polaroids, Lace, Wood, Vynil Adhesive, Ink Jet Print
Fly Mask is a photographic series created during King’s time at ACRE Artist Residency in the summer of 2021. While developing this series, King was simultaneously working on animation, I’m Sorry Mamma, I’m A Cowboy. The work explores the concept of concealed identity through a fly mask, with King donning a handmade lace mask. The grid of Polaroids evokes the act of sewing and quilting, a nod to King’s mother, an avid quilter, as the images are physically stitched together. This series takes multiple forms, including installations, screen prints, and digital photographs. Fly Mask was selected for the group exhibition Growing Up Queer in the South at the Greenville Museum of Art in North Carolina.
